Later
the next morning, she sat in her office going over photo assignments. Everyone
in her entire company was super busy trying to produce and come up with a
stunning cover that would out sell Vivid Image’s upcoming issue that was
rumored to blow Beth’s company out of the park. She wondered what the secret
assignment was that Ari and her boss had been talking about, and would that
come into play before the magazine her photography branch was working on hit
the stands?
Vivid’s
name, along with one other, is constantly haunting me. Will it ever stop? Beth
thought as she browsed through photo ideas, trying to come up with a fresh new
editing style that would make her work stand out. Noise outside interrupted her
thoughts and she wondered what all the commotion could be. It usually was never
loud or unruly in this part of town. Tara came into the office all smiles and
Beth knew right away something was up.
“What’s
going on?” she asked her.
Tara
smiled innocently. “Our next potential photography assignment is in the
elevator, on his way up to discuss terms with the company.” Her voice was high
pitched, like she couldn’t catch her breath because she couldn’t believe the
odds of something and wanted to shout out the news. “Having him here is really
going to blow our competition out of the bag. I wonder who they’ll choose to
take his picture?” Tara then stared at Beth with a scheming smile, having no
idea what the gravity of her words could mean.
Beth
eyed her suspiciously. Their company had dealt with capturing photos of
high-end public figures and celebrities all the time. Who had Tara so excited
that she didn’t want to spill his name? Her excited behavior reminded Beth of
their old college days, back when Tara would drool over every hot fraternity
boy that had walked down the hall. “Who is it?” Beth asked her.
“You’re
about to find out,” she winked. “He’s getting off the elevator now and coming
our way.”
Beth
turned her head expecting a hot TV personality, or maybe a reality star,
nothing out of the ordinary, and truth was she had way more important things to
worry about than Tara or Ari’s schemes. Instead, her heart sped up like it was
on speed. Her eyes blinked unsure as she felt herself about to trip over her
own two feet. No … It can’t be!
She
blinked through the glass in her office like a deer about to be run down and
yet refused to move because it just couldn’t believe something of this momentum
was coming to smash it. I’m still dreaming, that’s the only plausible
explanation … She trembled, her arms coming around to hug herself unconsciously
as she looked and saw Sterling Johnson, with his agent in tow, walking toward
her boss’s office.
Beth
began backing up a few steps only to bump right into her own desk and the pain
of it shot through her heels. His head was moving as he chatted with his agent
in an intense discussion and his blue eyes were about to fall right on her. Jesus! And he was even hotter than he
had been so many years back. His body seeming even taller and bigger. Hotter than he was on TV, in all the public
photos, and constantly in her annoying dreams. His lips were just as kissable
as ever as she felt the pulse within her chest speed up like she might have a
heart attack and seizure at any moment.
Beth
wasn’t the only person to notice; people around the office were standing up,
excited and shell-shocked. Beth was terrified as a thousand memories crashed
back into her head and she realized this truly wasn’t a dream. The impossible
was really taking place right now as her boss came out to greet him. And Ari,
her Ari, was right next to her boss, excited to shake Sterling’s hand. All as
Sterling and Beth’s eyes were about to find each other.
Beth
realized quickly that if she didn’t make a move and bolt, escaping now, than
her and Sterling’s story would cease being over, and instead everything would
threaten to being closely exposed.
