(Blurred Lines #3)
Publication date: September 25th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:
A girl in danger…
Aubrey Walsh never dreamed that she would find herself in an abusive relationship, but after her boyfriend hits her so hard he breaks her tooth, she flees the University of Maine to hide on a remote island with her best friend. Only to discover that she is pregnant. Terrified of what will happen if Jared finds out, she is walking along the rocks, deciding her future, when she slips.
A guy with a secret past…

After a job gone wrong, Riker has left the assassin business and is incognito as a ferryboat operator off the shores of Maine. It’s a lonely life, and when he sees a young woman almost fall off the rocks, he doesn’t hesitate to save her and take her in, though he’s determined to stay unemotionally uninvolved. But when the truth about her situation is revealed, he will do anything to protect Aubrey and her unborn child.
Even marry her. Even kill for her.

When Jared comes looking for the only girl who has ever rejected him, Riker won’t allow it. And Aubrey is torn between protecting herself and her child, or protecting the mysterious husband she has come to love.
And when chance brings them together but fate tears them apart, can their love survive the storm?

Q: Tell us about Let Me In.
A: Let Me In is the third book in my Blurred Lines series.  It features Aubrey, who we met in book one, You Make Me.  Aubrey was Cat's best friend and her fiance Ethan's sister.  In this book, Aubrey comes to stay with Cat and her boyfriend Heath on a remote island off the coast of Maine after being abused by her boyfriend.  She is also pregnant.  The next door neighbor is a sexy and mysterious former Marine who vows to keep Aubrey safe from harm.  I loved giving Aubrey her own story.  She was alternately sad and snarky in You Make Me and it was interesting to dig into her thoughts.

Q: How many books will there be in the Blurred Lines series?
A: As of right now, I have committed myself (haha, I might need to after this release schedule) to writing six books in the series.  Book four, Meant For Me, will release in December.  That book will feature Ethan, who has had trouble picking up the pieces of his life after he and Cat broke up.  Then book five will be sometime in the spring, most likely April.

Q: Is Let Me In based on a classic novel?
A: While You Make Me and Live For Me were inspired by Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, I confess I've strayed from that.  As I introduced these characters in the first two books, I wanted to write their stories without trying to muscle them into classic plots.  But they still retain the angst and the drama of the Bronte sister novels, which to me is perfect for New Adult romance.

Q: Do you have any contemporary romances releasing that aren't New Adult?
A: Always!  In October, Final Lap, book eight in my Fast Track series is out.  Also, Close Up, the second in a trilogy from Harlequin Blaze will be out.  November brings Sexy Mistakes, an anthology with myself and two other authors featuring online/social media snafus.  Finally, in December there will be a fun, sexy novella titled The Nemesis Affair, featuring an Irish rugby player and the woman he hires to be his nemesis.

Excerpt: Rock Courtship (Book 1.5) A Rock Kiss Novel

“Beer—whatever you have on tap,” David said to the grizzled bartender and grabbed a stool, his eye on the rugby game in progress on the TV screen bolted above the bar.

He’d hardly taken a sip of his beer, the dark liquid bitingly cold, when he felt a presence at his back. Instincts honed by a childhood in one of the toughest areas of New York had him focusing on the mirror behind the bar to check out the situation before he turned. A big, bald, and heavily muscled male with a spiderweb tattoo on his neck was standing behind and just to the side of David, a smirk on his pockmarked face.

Belly heating, David turned with a slight smile. “Problem?”

The bald man bared his teeth and, laughing, looked to a table to his right. “Hear that, boys?” he called out to his friends. “The pussy rock star here wants to know if there’s a problem.”

Laughter and shouts from that particular table, while the rest of the men in the bar went quiet. David didn’t move, taking a measure of the players without letting it show. “Always know your opponent” had been one of the first things his father had taught him—Vicente Rivera didn’t believe in turning the other cheek; he believed in teaching his sons how to put bullies on the ground and keep them there.

“Yeah, there’s a problem,” the bald guy said, shoving at David’s shoulder. “This is a real bar for real men. Not pussies.”

Like that, then. Good. He was in the mood to do some violence. Lifting his beer, David took a long drink, then slammed it down… and punched Bald Head in the jaw at the same time that he kicked out with his foot to connect with the other man’s knee. The jackass went down like a ton of bricks.

Roaring in rage, the man’s friends came at David.

He grinned and started to show them what this “pussy rock star” could do.

It wasn’t until they’d broken a table and several chairs, and the bartender had called the cops that David realized Thea would have to deal with the fallout from this. Fuck, fuck, fuck, he thought as he was shoved into a cell alone, his erstwhile opponents in the cell opposite. Sliding down the graffiti-marked wall to the floor, he thought about the phone call the desk sergeant had said he could make and decided against it.

Fox had Molly with him—the band’s lead singer had been waiting for his girl to arrive since the instant Schoolboy Choir set foot in the city. As for Noah and Abe, they both had their own plans. He knew any one of the three men would drop those plans in an instant to come to his aid, but since the cops had made it clear he’d be spending the night in a cell no matter what, why mess up their plans?

“You do or say anything that’ll hit the media, you call me. Day or night. I hate surprises—so don’t you dare surprise me.”

Thea had given that order to all four of them when she’d agreed to act as their publicist. Her up-front nature and dedication to her job was part of the reason they’d hired her; Thea was the best and she didn’t take any shit from her clients. He wasn’t doing himself any favors by not calling her.

Right then, David couldn’t find it in himself to care. It wasn’t as if she could hurt him any more than she already had. And Jesus, how long was he going to carry this torch that was burning him alive? “Fuck, fuck, fuck,” he said aloud, banging the back of his head against the wall.

Distance excerpt 1:
I couldn’t wait to get these tights off, not to mention the heels. I was getting some major blisters and my feet were killing me, but those would have to wait until I made it home. Opting for the far bathroom to avoid the mile-long line at the nearby one, I continued down the halls until they had significantly thinned out.
It was a relief when I finally made it. I pushed the door open and stepped inside. I momentarily relaxed as I hastily took off my tights and replaced my shoes. The ragamuffin look wasn’t really in style and I was glad to get rid of my ripped tights.
Shifting quickly, I spared a glance in the mirror only to find my eyeliner smudged. I definitely had the goth look going on. With a paper towel, I carefully wiped the smears away until I looked normal again. I tossed the rag in the trash and my hand found the door handle.
Just as I was about to leave, I heard a very inappropriate moan. Ugh, some people had no class. Sex in a high school bathroom was disgusting. Just thinking about all the germs and STDs that could be acquired grossed me out.
Not wanting to know who it was, I headed to the door so I could slip out as quickly as possible.
I was so close to escaping unscathed. That was, until I heard a familiar voice urging the girl on. At first, I froze, stunned. It couldn’t be; it just couldn’t. At that moment I suddenly didn’t care if I was interrupting hot sex.

Why Ghosts?

My new series follows the adventures of Ellie Jordan, a private detective who specializes in removing ghosts from haunted houses and other locations.  There are several reasons I wanted to write about ghosts in particular.  They’re particularly interesting as paranormal characters/creatures go, because unlike vampires, werewolves, zombies, and so on, there is at least some chance that ghosts might really exist.  While we can say with some confidence that nobody in the world actually turns into the wolf on a full moon, we can’t dismiss ghosts with as much certainty.

Ghosts have been with us for at least as long as recorded history.  Ghosts are mentioned in the most ancient texts, including The Epic of Gilgamesh, the world’s earliest known work of literature.  Odysseus speaks with ghosts in the underworld; in the Old Testament, the witch of Endor summons the ghost of the prophet Samuel to speak with King Saul.

Ghosts are universal, and stories of ghosts and spirits exist in all human societies.  This made them an even more appealing subject, because the world of the story could be virtually identical to our own.  It’s not hard to find people who claim to have encountered a ghost at some point in their lives.  Maybe you’ve encountered one yourself!

In the spirit of keeping the series in close touch with reality, I decided that Ellie’s assorted ghost gear would consist of real items, as much as possible.  Since there is now a huge “ghost hunter” subculture, there is a pretty wide assortment of related tools available: EMF Meter, Mel-Meters, special motion detectors, and so on.  Ghost hunters typically use infrared, nightvision, and high-powered microphones to detect voices or other spectral sounds.

I also studied a large number of reported ghost sightings and encounters, as well as near-death experiences, to learn all I could about how ghosts behave and what their motivations might be.  There were far, far more stories out there than I originally expected to find.

Finally, while writing the first book, I realized that while the series provided an opportunity to write lots of fun, spooky mystery stories, it also brought me to deeper questions about human nature and reality itself.  All fiction is really about exploring the human soul, and ghost stories are all about the human soul.

I hope you’ll join Ellie on her adventures in ghost trapping!  I’ve put a lot of work into developing this series, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.
